The beautiful and talented Rebecca Ingram Powell will be our opening keynote Friday night. Her topic, Identity Theft: Who Am I, is about labels the world assigns us and how our true identity lies in Jesus Christ’s saving grace. You won’t want to miss it! In the months leading up to 2:1 I have had the pleasure of getting to know Rebecca and have been continually impressed by her grace, heart and sense of humor – and I wanted you to have the same experience. So here she is, Rebecca Ingram Powell. 2:1 - Tell us a little about yourself and your everyday life.
RIP – Over the past couple of years, my life has changed. When my daughter Danya graduated from homeschool in 2010, and I had two teenage boys left, things really looked a lot different. I’m still homeschooling, but homeschooling the high school years is just so much different than those early years. My kids are able to be on their own most of the time, thanks to great curriculum and the help of local tutorials. I’ve been able to focus more on my writing, and I work part-time now as editor for a website. On any given day, there can be a band practice at my house (My three kids are in a total of four bands.) I love seeing them play. There are kids over here a lot, and I love that too. And right now, my boys are playing baseball, so everyday life includes games most afternoons, which makes this one of my favorite times of the year. Just in the past year, one aspect of my everyday life has really changed as I have been trying to be available for my sister-in-law, who began her fight with breast cancer last May. Accompanying her when I can to doctor’s visits, chemo and radiation treatments, and hanging out at the hospital with her has given me a new perspective on life, friendship, family, and priorities.
2:1 – You’ve published several books, where do you get your passion to write?
RIP – I get it from the Lord. It’s completely the way that I am hard-wired. I write. It’s what I do. I’m not sure that answered the question, but I don’t have to go looking for passion to write. It came with the package, LOL.
2:1 - What’s your favorite topic to write about?
RIP – Okay, this is tough question for me because I love writing. I will write about anything, LOL, because I love the process and the crafting of it. I love to write about what the Lord is doing. I love to take His Word and pick apart a passage. I love to write about parenting and all the things that go with it.
One of the things I have most enjoyed in writing for ParentLife magazine over the past ten years has been writing other people’s stories in feature articles. I love to get a life story out of somebody who doesn’t write and put it on paper for them. One of the nicest things anyone ever said about my writing came from a woman who had struggled with secondary infertility (which is when you have a first child but are unable to conceive any other children). She told me her story and after the article was published, she called me and said, I have never been able to explain to people how I felt or what my journey through this was really like. Then I read your article, and you had done it for me. Thank you.
Honestly, I have really loved everything the Lord has allowed me to write.
2:1 - What do you hope to bring to The 2:1 Conference as the opening keynote?
RIP – You know, that is a pretty daunting task. I know it is critical to get started on the right foot, and I am praying that the Lord will allow me to set the tone that He wants for the conference one of unity and love, with each one looking out for the other’s best interest. I would love it if we all look at the conference not for what we can get out of it (in the way of encouragement, information, and motivation) but for what we can give to someone else through it (encouragement, information, and motivation). To me, that would make for a great conference.
Doesn’t that just make you want to hug her? You’ll have the chance at 2:1! But now for the book giveaway – here is your chance to win one of 5 copies of Rebecca’s book Season of Change: Parenting Your Middle Schooler with Passion and Purpose. This book is full of practical parenting tips to help you guide your child through this challenging time with faith and critical thinking. But don’t take my word for it. Check out what others (like Michelle Duggar) had to say.

In middle school I longed to have a pair of parachute pants…but never got any of my own
. And I was devastated when my stepmom cut my hair too short and I couldn’t use the curling iron to poof it up anymore.
I did have a pair of parachute pants, and looked awful in them. lol
Hmm…I left a comment in the rafflecopter box, but don’t see it here.
I surely used more than my share of Aquanet!
I definitely used Aquanet! It was the only way to get my hair to stay wide and high! LOL I also had a pair of parachute pants!
