A new school year is here. It’s such an exciting time! New curriculum arrives at our door, or to our inbox. New schedules are planned. Daily routines are laid out. We have renewed focus and drive. We are so excited to begin!
I was able to try this product for free and was compensated for my time in writing the review. All thoughts opinions are my own. Read more about the review policies in the 2:1 Disclosure.
So we begin. But, somewhere between the toddler’s second diaper change during your 8-year-old’s math lesson, and the bored sighs from your 4-year-old while you help your pre-teen with composition (and let’s not talk about the cereal that the toddler just dumped on the floor)…we begin to question how we’ll get through the week, let alone the year, with little ones underfoot.
Sound familiar? It’s okay, I’ve been there. I’m there now. Thankfully I’ve learned the secret of occupying little ones during homeschool in a way that’s productive, educational, and fun: online reading games!
You may have heard about Reading Eggs, an award-winning online reading program for kids. It was designed for children ages 3-13. I was given the opportunity to try Reading Eggs with my 5-year-old daughter.
I enjoyed the freedom it gave me to work with my older student, while my 5-year-old was educationally engaged – not busy, engaged.
You can try Reading Eggs for 4 weeks for free. I definitely recommend this program as a great way to occupy little ones during homeschool! Now, I know there are a lot of online reading games out there. I’ve tried several others before. They all have many benefits in common. However, there were several points that made Reading Eggs stand out.
Benefits of Online Reading Games
Occupy Little Ones During Homeschool
Online reading games like Reading Eggs are fun! If an activity is fun, it keeps the child’s attention. This is a wonderful blessing that will keep your little ones occupied while you have quiet time to work one-on-one with older students.
Children are Engaged, Not Busy
Movies and TV shows are fun and definitely have their place, but they simply keep our kids busy. Our children’s minds are not well engaged when they are just entertained in front of a screen. I like to opt for the interactive engagement of online reading games when I can.
They are Learning Too
My little ones always like to “do school” just like their older siblings. I love that I can turn on an online reading game and my little ones can learn at their own pace during lesson time! With headphones, they can even “work” in the same room as everyone else.
Specific Benefits of Reading Eggs
The Focus Really is Fun Filled Learning
I love that Reading Eggs is an online reading game, not an online game with reading. If you’ve tried other online reading options I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about.
During her learning play, my daughter was actively entertained by learning. She didn’t get distracted in a “rewards area,” fret about winning points or tickets, or get overwhelmed because she didn’t have enough virtual dollars to buy a reward.
She simply enjoyed playing the game and learning. I love that!
It Grows With Her AND Has Multi-Levels
Reading Eggs is broken into four separate but integrated programs for toddlers through early teens:
- Reading Eggs Junior (toddlers, about ages 2-4)
- Reading Eggs (what I used with my 5-year-old)
- Reading Eggspress (for older readers)
This is important for my daughter because she likes to “graduate” to the next level. So, not only does she graduate through the internal levels of Reading Eggs, once she become more proficient, she can graduate to the next age/skill system as well.
The Reading Eggs free trial gives you access to all four options.
It’s Incremental AND Has Room For Review
This point piggy-backs on the one above. Reading Eggs is designed to move your child through the program at their own pace. That means they won’t jump ahead to the next skill if they’re not proficient in a current skill set.
At first, this may cause some frustration in kids who are used to learning games that allow them to progress without proving proficiency. But, with encouragement to try again, and review, students quickly learn the value of mastering the game.I love that @ReadingEggs is an online reading game, not an online game with reading.
